Research building for University of Duisburg-Essen and event center in Krefeld—total contract value up to EUR 130 million
HOCHTIEF has been awarded two major building construction contracts in Germany with a total value of up to EUR 130 million. For the University of Duisburg-Essen, the company will build a new research center on the campus in Essen. HOCHTIEF will also convert and extend a former boiler house in Krefeld into a modern event center.
Sustainable research center added to university campus
The new research center in Essen is a five-story building for interdisciplinary work in the fields of nano- and material sciences, energy, water, microbiome, protein, environmental and chemical research. At the heart of the building is a 4,100-square-meter state-of-the-art laboratory area.
The building will be equipped with a large-scale photovoltaic system. The sustainable infrastructure also includes e-mobility facilities as well as bicycle parking spaces.
Construction work will begin in late summer 2025 and is scheduled for completion in spring 2028.
Industrial hall becomes location for events and other functions
HOCHTIEF will convert the former boiler house on the Mies van der Rohe campus in Krefeld into a center with state-of-the-art technology for concerts and special events. As part of the contract award, HOCHTIEF is responsible for the entire planning services across all project phases and will be commissioned in stages.
New contracts in market segments with extensive experience
HOCHTIEF and its U.S. company Turner have completed numerous university construction projects, for example in Bochum/Germany, Duisburg/Germany, Berkeley/USA and Harvard/USA. Currently, HOCHTIEF is building the new University Campus for Police and Public Administration in Herne/Germany. And at Rosenheim Technical University of Applied Sciences, HOCHTIEF is delivering new faculty buildings in all-timber construction.
Furthermore, HOCHTIEF has realized numerous prestigious event properties. Turner, for example, has built Madison Square Garden in New York and many of the largest stadiums in the USA, such as the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. In Germany, HOCHTIEF has built numerous musical halls, theaters and sports facilities in addition to the Elbe Philharmonic Hall. In the Czech Republic, the company is currently building a large multifunctional arena in Brno.
